Bill Gates Is Good Without God, Are You?

Secular student alliance has started a new bus ad campaign. Their message is very clear, you don’t need to believe in invisible man sitting in the sky to be Good person. You can be good without your imaginary friend.

Bill Gates Philanthropy - Good without GodBill Gates, after creating the most successful company around, must have asked himself “Now what”? He started philanthropy foundation in 2000 and he did the best that he could with all his power. You got to love this man for his noble work no matter if you are Apple fan or Microsoft hater.

Warren Burrett Philanthropy - Good without God

Warren Buffett decided in 2006 that he would donate almost all of his fortune to charity, all $40 billion of it! Buffett’s children will inherit a tiny fraction because he believes that money rightly belongs to the people, and should not be used to construct a familial corporate dynasty.

Donating large sums to worthy causes is not the only or even most important way a person might be “Good” but it is undeniably one of them. Perhaps for some people religion really does inspire them to help others and if it does, great. Just don’t imagine it is a requirement. Some people are good with God. Some, like Gates and Buffett, are just as good without God. So its not about where you are getting your morals from but how good your morals are.

Money to church IS CHARITY. Here in India, no atheist organisation or govt. schemes cater to the tribals. Who feeds and clothes them? ITS The BSI(Bible Society of India)..
…..worst of all, the poor tribal think its from the govt. and from their politicians . But its cool, BSI doesnt work for recognition…they dont mind..

I love that the name of the website, is based purely and wholly on the parable of the Good Samaritan from the Bible. I would venture that while these people deny God’s existence, their morals remain resolutely based on the Christian values which Jesus taught. Wonderfully naive idea! The domain name earns it a total FAIL! 🙂

      Brijesh November 4, 2010

Sorry to break it down for you but its the other way around.

Good people don’t get their morals from religious books, but instead, religions tend to observe “Good” things in general and then write it down in their books so that religious people can follow it. Human kind is not dumb enough that it can’t tell difference between Good and Bad. Our brain has evolved to tell that difference without referring to a book.

And regarding the domain name, it seems that you didn’t get the pun out of it. Way to go!

“Human kind is not dumb enough that it can’t tell difference between Good and Bad. ” You just contradicted your point…Apparently you are quiet dumb by failing to find the difference..The Bible was meant for people like you, who feel they dont need the Bible cuz what they are currently doing is good although in reality you r simply doing bad thing… want me to mention the bad things you did? Oh lemme start by palagrism starting from your youtube page. Hope you dont go stealing an iPhone AD from youtube, stamp your name and ur site on it and advertise it as your product. Remember u stealing WHUZGUDZ video??? i came upon this site from that. As soon as i stepped in to this site, u commited a crime. You could go to jail, oh, wait, u deserve to go to jail, technically speaking

I’m a recovering Christian who now is agnostic. I consider the bible a disgusting hate book. It was written by a bunch of chauvinist, archaic men who wanted to keep slaves and oppress women, the gay community, animals and anyone else that doesn’t believe that the bible is the word of God.

Michael Ruse, a philosopher of science explains best:

“Morality is a biological adaptation, no less than our hands and feet and teeth. Considered as a rationally justifiable set of claims about an ‘objective something’, ethics is illusory. I appreciate that when someone says, ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’ they think they are referring above and beyond themselves. Nevertheless, such reference is truly without foundation. Morality is just an aid to survival and reproduction, and any deeper meaning is illusory.”

    • While I agree with the sentiment. I question if Bill Gates is really good. None of is charitable contributions have affected his lifestyle in the slightest nor will they. I also have to consider his predatory and legally questionable business practices. Maybe he should have put some of the money toward making better software so as to make more lives better.

I don’t know enough about Warren Buffitt to comment. But anyone that makes that much money has almost certainly engaged in practices that might not have been the best for all concerned.

    • You might note that the “Good Samaritan” was not a christian. You might also note that the entire christian religion is founded upon lies. “Christian Morality” is an oxymoron.

Especially if you get to define “good” which is a very easy thing to do with $26 billion and denying any sort of supreme being’s definition of “good”.

Please, never go to doctor when you are sick. Medical field is the result of good work which you do not believe will save you.

I want you to only pray and not get any medical treatment when you are sick. We will see at that time whether your God can save you.

      • lovingpeopleforChrist

I think you are a little confused about what xandra is saying. Good works cannot save our souls. Only God can save our souls, eternally. Doctors cannot save our souls, only sometimes heal our ailments. God made the Dr.’s and gave them the ability to do research to find cures. I love that my God did that.
We can go out and do good works until we can’t stand up anymore. That will not save us from being eternally separated from God.
The answer is accepting the work of Jesus on the cross as your
substitute. Jesus took your sin as He was the only undefiled man who
lived on this Earth. The scripture says that: at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 5:6). God’s just wrath against sin has been placed on His Son Jesus so that all
who believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God
did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the
        world should be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged;
he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not
believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16b-18).

What are the consequences if you reject the answer?

God’s wrath includes the prospect of eternal punishment – it is appointed to men to die once and then comes the judgment
(Hebrews 9:27). You will rise from the dead and will face the Judge and
know that you rejected His kind and merciful answer. You will be
condemned to everlasting separation from God and then you spend all
eternity in torment in hell. Jesus spoke about this as a lake of fire which was prepared for the devil and all his angels (demonic spirits) (Matthew 25: 41).

The passage that appears below, written by Paul the Apostle nearly 2000
years ago, is remarkably up to date. If people reject God, His
guidance, and the way of escape through His Son Jesus, the results are
bad for individuals and society and will end in judgement.

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the
godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their
wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because
God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s
invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been
clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are
        without excuse.
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave
thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts
were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and
exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like
mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to
sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They
exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created
things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen.
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women
exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men
also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust
for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and
received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the
knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought
not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness,
evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit
and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent,
arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey
their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things
deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also
approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:18-32)

You are most definitely right: those men ARE good without God.
But, it’s not like being good is going to save, you end the end.
However, who am I to judge what people need/want to think in order to do the right thing? I’m sure to them it only matters that they’re productive citizens in the end, and, as it’s not my business, that’s fine with me.
(Though, may I just say to the commentors below: ignorance is as ignorance does. That being said, and really making no sense at all, I’d like to say, your comments are… More than slightly biased. Please keep in mind there is a difference between Catholic and Protestant’s. And, then, dividing the churches even more, there are differences between those churches doing the work of God for him and for themselves.)
(ALSO, to Julie: You’ve obviously had some bad relationships with churches and the Bible, as, the Bible I know and love is not a book of hate. You’ve also obviously been reading in the Old Testament, which we don’t live in anymore, but, I’m not here to preach, though, it seems like I’ve done quite a bit of it. So, I’ll say this and take my peace: God hates the sin, not the sinner. That’s about it.)

I am sorry to break it down to you but most of the sins are done by religious people these days. And I don’t encourage anybody to follow a book written by an ancient dude thousands of years ago. Its just stupid (Sorry for using that language but I couldn’t think of a better word.)

Why use all the human energy praying for something that doesn’t exist? You can put that time in volunteering the real problems of the world.

Why make all the mega mega churches and raise funds to build more religious buildings? Don’t you think its morally wrong to spend all this money in useless things when children are dying of hunger in other countries? Where is your humanity in that case?

Why do religious entity gets tax cut? In my opinion, all religious activity should be charged 300% tax.

      • Ashley 'Nae Ward
Ashley 'Nae Ward July 26, 2012

Sorry I’m so late (I highly doubt you even care, but)…

Most of the sins aren’t done by religious people – And how would you prove that anyway? It’s just that when we do sin, and we go around claiming “Oh we’re so holy!” people take notice and definitely capitalize on it. Atheists and Religious people sin just the same and alike, there’s just a difference in what they believe.
I pray for hope, love, peace and an understanding; they all exist. Now, whether I pray to something you think does or doesn’t exist is a different matter completely, but, I pray to what I know is real and my reality, and, that’s all I have to say for that. (Not to mention I do take time to volunteer in the “real problems of the world” – Community Service is one of my Project Majors).
Where is my humanity? I don’t go to a mega church. Never have been to a mega church. Probably will never be to a mega church.
But, it’s because I agree mostly with what you said – there are more important things than opulent palaces with the clever guise of being places of worship. You can’t lump all Christians together in that category. (And, pardon me, but, I’m a bit more concerned about the child in this country with no home or shoes – though I have helped with mission trips to Africa).
You’re being just as biased as you want me to be unbiased. “300% tax”? No. But, I do believe it’s  because, like a school, people go to get education (now, whether you want to call that education “Fairy Tales 101” or “How to Find the Way, the Truth and the Light” is up to you), so, like a school (or a public school, anyway), it doesn’t get directly taxed.

Hi brijux, came upon your site after u stole WHZGUD2’s dance video, advertised your site on it and put it up on your YouTube page. Well, what can i say, guess thats OK for atheists 🙂 (actually i was expecting more dance videos in this site, but shame on you)

Ok coming to your comment above lemme give my 2 cents, one point after the other–

        1) “most sins are done by religious ppl”– wow, where the f did u get that statistics. U just made a false claim to emphasize your point, u just friggin did a bad thing.. The religios sinners u mentioned do for their belief, right or wrong, cant judge, but you commit sin to pull traffic to your site. Who is more pathetic. I hate the Talibans but somehow i hate you more.

2)” I don’t encourage anybody to follow a book written by an ancient dude thousands of years ago.” —-

Guess you dont study history as subject. History is written by credible people and thats why we follow it. And the BIBLE has proved historical accuracy, though secularism in academics has removed the miracles to cater to worldwide audience. You were not there during World War 1, but you do know what happened right? from where? from Historical sources. Now why do you believe in these historical sources? cuz you believe the credibility right? You dont find BIBLE credible then i guess its because you are uncomfortable with it. The Ottomans dont believe that Hagia Sophia was desacrated by them, however the rest of the world believe otherwise. See, people only believe those history which they LiKE. You dont believe in Bible, well, thats ur ignorance.

3)”Why use all the human energy praying for something that doesn’t exist? You can put that time in volunteering the real problems of the world.”—-.

I still hold this value, because i believe God doesnt reward lazy ass people who jst pray and pray without doing anything. However, God asks us to pray, cuz its a communication link between him and me. I cant go and feed the african refugees from my home but i do pray for them and participate in awareness programs and charity.

4)”Why make all the mega mega churches and raise funds to build more religious buildings? Don’t you think its morally wrong to spend all this money in useless things when children are dying of hunger in other countries? Where is your humanity in that case?” —

same as saying why build a huge office for UN headquarters when that money can be used for humanitarian purpose. If you are smart enough to open a site, then i guess you got my point.

5)”Why do religious entity gets tax cut?”—-

because its a friggin service sector!! Next thing you will demand is TAX on Red Cross doctors!!! Oh GOD have mercy on this Brijux dude, he is ignorant as a child.

“The purpose of the argument is not to argue that one must believe in God to be moral, but rather that God must exist in order to anchor moral values. Objective morals are distinguished from absolute morals. “Absolute” means a moral value always holds regardless of the situation, such as that lying is always wrong even in situations where we might think it is right. “Objective” means that moral values hold regardless of what anyone thinks, so for instance the Holocaust was wrong even if everyone were brainwashed into thinking it right.

    1. If God does not exist, then objective moral values do not exist

    2. Objective moral values and duties do exist

    3. Therefore, God exists”

Read the details of each arguemnt including counter-arguments to commot objections here:

    See also:

    • Richard Nixon
      Richard Nixon March 22, 2014

God does not need to exist in order for there to be moral values. That argument has no logical basis.

The brain is a source of morality, first of all. And the brain is a product of evolution. The brain from the caveman days where morals lacked evolved into what it is today, where morals supposedly exist. Bill Gates, an Agnostic-Atheist, donated billions of dollars to charity. What genuine man uses ‘god’ as an excuse for doing god rather than just loving humanity and being a good person? No genuine man does. Once again, I debunk your idiotic claims that “god=morality” with scientific facts and studies. In fact, the last one proves that Atheists and Agnostics, usually, are more driven by compassion than religious people. Not that I said usually, as this isn’t a full out generalization.

Daily Mail UK on Scientists discovering moral compass, which does not need religion:

“Scientists have discovered a real-life ‘moral compass’ in the brain that controls how we judge other people’s behaviour.
The region, which lies just behind the right ear, becomes more active when we think about other people’s misdemeanours or good works.
In an extraordinary experiment, researchers were able to use powerful magnets to disrupt this area of the brain and make people temporarily less moral.
The study highlights how our sense of right and wrong isn’t just based on upbringing, religion or philosophy – but by the biology of our brains.
Dr Liane Young, who led the study, said: ‘You think of morality as being a really high-level behaviour. To be able to apply a magnetic field to a specific brain region and change people’s moral judgements is really astonishing.’ ”

Penn Jillette from the NY Times makes it quite clear:

‘Religion is not morality. Theists ask me, “If there’s no god, what would stop me from raping and killing everyone I want to.” My answer is always: “I, myself, have raped and killed everyone I want to … and the number for both is zero.” Behaving morally because of a hope of reward or a fear of punishment is not morality. Morality is not bribery or threats. Religion is bribery and threats. Humans have morality. We don’t need religion.

Atheism is the absence of religion. We don’t really need atheism. We just need to get rid of religion.
Religion is faith. Faith is belief without evidence. Belief without evidence cannot be shared. Faith is a feeling. Love is also a feeling, but love makes no universal claims. Love is pure. The lover reports on his or her feelings and needs nothing more. Faith claims knowledge of a world we share but without evidence we can share. Feeling love is beautiful. Feeling the earth is 6,000 years old is stupid.’

      Huffington Post:

“Atheists and agnostics are more driven by compassion to help others than are highly religious people, a new study finds.

That doesn’t mean highly religious people don’t give, according to the research to be published in the July 2012 issue of the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. But compassion seems to drive religious people’s charitable feelings less than other groups.

‘Overall, we find that for less religious people, the strength of their emotional connection to another person is critical to whether they will help that person or not,’ study co-author and University of California, Berkeley social psychologist Robb Willer said in a statement. ‘The more religious, on the other hand, may ground their generosity less in emotion, and more in other factors such as doctrine, a communal identity, or reputational concerns.’ ”

Say, if I do not believe in god I am less moral than you? I highly doubt that.
