If you think MS Windows sucks compared to Mac OS because windows needs anti-virus software, its like saying President Barack Obama sucks compared to you because he needs security guards.

I know, the video is very lame, this is what happens if you are bored on Sunday afternoon.

What kind of bullshit analogy is this? I can’t vouch for Vista or Windows 7, but versions of Windows up to and including Windows XP were designed with the assumption that not only do users not know about security, but they don’t care. Thus, XP ran as administrator by default, and IE6 was configured by default to run any damn ActiveX control a site specified.

On MacOS X, a user with administrative rights still has to authenticate before he can do anything that is considered to require admin rights, such as installing certain applications or altering various settings. Microsoft attempted to emulate this behavior, but instead of simply adapting sudo for Windows, they succumbed to Not-Invented-Here (NIH) Syndrome and foisted User Access Control on its users. I doubt that it’s a coincidence that the acronym UAC also alludes to the megacorporation in Doom’s excuse plot, which opened a portal to Hell.

This is not to say that OS X is secure by default. Not even OpenBSD is secure by default. The only truly secure machine is a machine that isn’t running and can’t be turned on — which isn’t very useful. However, it has been easier for crackers to exploit Windows than it has for them to exploit OS X and other Unix variants.

    Matthew,

Have you ever heard of Pwn to Own contest? (If not, google it) Each year Mac computers are hacked first in this contest followed by windows and linux. Last 3 years of reports says that Macs are hacked in first 2 minutes.

You will ask then why don’t we see it in real life? Why do we only see PCs getting hacked? Its because nobody cares around the 1% Mac population. Hackers are trying to hack maximum possible computers so they choose PCs. If they choose to hack Mac, it can be done in minutes, but they are not interested as there are not much people to hack.

Windows is by design, as Matthew said – is not secure. It is not Windows fault, it is Microsoft’s fault! And yes, Mac population is ~7% and growing day by day.

Uh, oh. I’m not Mac fan!
